Te Anau Glow Worms or Waitomo?
Te Anau or Waitomo for glow worms: two caves about 990 km apart in a straight line, one on each island. How each one works, and which fits your route.
Pick by island: few trips cross the whole country for one cave. The Te Anau glow worm cave is in Fiordland at the bottom of the South Island; Waitomo is in Waikato on the North Island; they are about 990 km apart in a straight line, with Cook Strait between them. Both are home to the same glow worm, titiwai, Arachnocampa luminosa. On a South Island trip through Te Anau, the cave is RealNZ’s Te Anau: Glowworm Caves Guided Tour, a boat across the lake and a silent grotto in 135 minutes, from US$72 a person, checked November 2026. On a North Island loop, it is Waitomo.
The calendar above is the Te Anau glow worm cave trip, with 3,176 reviews (checked November 2026).
Where the two caves are

The line on the map is a straight line, not a route: by road and ferry the trip between them is much longer, and it takes in the crossing of Cook Strait. Waitomo sits on the North Island’s road network south of Auckland, at 39 Waitomo Village Road. Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park, and the cave is across Lake Te Anau from the town.

Which one fits your trip
Te Anau, if you are already going to Fiordland: for Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound, or on the drive from Queenstown, which is about 172 km by road. The cave turns a free afternoon or evening in Te Anau into a lake crossing plus the grotto, and pairs with a fiord day on either side. It suits a quiet, focused trip: no talking in the grotto, no cameras, one operator.
Waitomo, if your trip is on the North Island. Waitomo’s site also sells tours of Ruakuri Cave (1.5 hours) and Aranui Cave (1 hour) and longer underground trips named the Black Labyrinth (3 hours) and the Black Abyss (5 hours), so it suits anyone who wants more than one cave or an active day underground. Waitomo’s operators, rafting trips and prices are covered in depth at waitomo-glowworm-caves-tour.com.
Both, if you are doing the whole country. They are different trips more than better and worse ones: one is a lake crossing to a small cave in a national park, the other a cave complex on the main road network. The glow worms are the same species.
The glow worms themselves
Whichever cave you choose, the light comes from the same animal: the larva of a fungus gnat, glowing to lure insects into sticky threads, at its best where the air is damp and still. What you see in the dark explains the glow, and why the Te Anau cave allows no cameras.
