Can You See Glow Worms in Te Anau for Free?

No official source names a free glow worm spot around Te Anau, and the cave is reached only by RealNZ's boat. What DOC and RealNZ do name, and how far it is.

Updated November 2026

Not in Te Anau itself. We found no official source, at the Department of Conservation (DOC) or at RealNZ, that names a free place to see glow worms in or around the town. The Te Anau glow worm cave is across the lake with no walk-in route: by RealNZ’s own account it is the only company with access. The nearest cave that DOC describes as glow worm habitat, and lists with no fee, is the Clifden Caves in Southland, about 89 km away by road, and it is a self-guided caving trip, not an evening stroll.

Why the Te Anau cave is not free

The cave is on the far shore of Lake Te Anau, about 15 km by the boat route as mapped from the check-in at 85 Lakefront Drive.

The cave sits on the western shore of Lake Te Anau, about 15 km by the boat route as mapped from the town’s lakefront. The only way in is RealNZ’s guided trip, which crosses the lake by catamaran, walks the group in and finishes on a small boat in the grotto. The glow worms are not on the lakefront, along the town’s foreshore, or anywhere you can stroll to in an evening, as far as any DOC or RealNZ page we read says.

Where official sources do name free glow worms

Clifden Caves, Southland (DOC). DOC’s page for the caves says they “provide a natural habitat for the glow worm”, which needs damp, still air. DOC lists no fee and no booking, and the route is self-guided, off Clifden Gorge Road near the Clifden and Blackmount corner on State Highway 96, about 89 km by road, routed from the RealNZ Visitor Centre in Te Anau to the caves’ lower entrance. They are no casual walk: DOC rates them for fit and agile people aged 12 and over, with crawling, cold pools to wade, 4 m ladders and a ledge beside a deep pool. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. DOC’s gear list includes a helmet, because of unstable rocks and low ceilings, and each person needs two torches and spare batteries; there is no phone reception, and the cave can flash flood: DOC’s advice is not to go in if rain is forecast, if it is raining, or if it has rained in the past 24 hours. Access is over a stile through private property.

Hokitika Gorge and the Redwoods in Rotorua (RealNZ). RealNZ’s glowworm guide names these two as free places to look for glow worms at night without a guide. Both are a long way from Fiordland: the Redwoods are on the North Island.

Neither is a substitute for a Te Anau evening. Clifden is a caving outing with real hazards; the other two are on other legs of a New Zealand trip.

If you look for glow worms anywhere

Light is the enemy. Glow worms glow to lure insects, and RealNZ bans photography in its cave because flash affects them and ruins the eyes’ adjustment to the dark. Wherever you are, find a safe place to stand still, turn your torch off, and wait: the glow builds as your eyes adjust. Do not touch the threads that hang below them. DOC recommends not going through the Clifden cave alone, and not entering it if rain is forecast, if it is raining or if it has rained within the past 24 hours; as plain advice, the same caution suits any cave.

What the paid trip adds

If you are in Te Anau and want to see glow worms, the boat is the way. RealNZ’s trip takes care of the parts a free cave leaves to you: the crossing, a lit path on the way in, a guide, and a grotto that stays dark and quiet because nobody is allowed a camera. It takes 135 minutes from 85 Lakefront Drive, from US$72 a person, checked November 2026, with tea and coffee included and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
