The Glow Worm Cave and a Fiord: Milford or Doubtful Sound?
Pair the Te Anau glow worm cave with a fiord day: Milford Sound, about 119 km by road, or Doubtful Sound across Lake Manapouri. Day trips from Te Anau compared.
No listing combines the glow worm cave with a fiord, so plan two bookings on two days. The cave takes 135 minutes from the Te Anau lakefront and fits an afternoon or evening; a fiord takes the whole day. The usual pairing is the caves one evening and Milford Sound the next morning, or the other way round. Choose Milford Sound for the classic coach-and-cruise day, about 119 km by road from Te Anau; choose Doubtful Sound for a longer day across Lake Manapouri and over Wilmot Pass. The cave itself is RealNZ’s Te Anau: Glowworm Caves Guided Tour, from US$72 a person, checked November 2026.
The calendar above is the Te Anau glow worm cave trip, with 3,176 reviews (checked November 2026). Book the fiord day first, then the cave around it.
The two fiords from Te Anau

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is reached by road: about 119 km, routed from the RealNZ Visitor Centre in Te Anau to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, where the cruises leave. The coach days from Te Anau take about 7.5 to 9.5 hours, with photo stops and short walks on the way and a cruise of about 2 hours on the fiord. The road, State Highway 94, closes at times in bad weather and for avalanche risk: check NZTA’s SH94 Milford Road status page before you go.
Doubtful Sound / Patea is reached across a lake and a mountain pass. RealNZ’s day goes by coach to Manapouri, 22 km by road, then crosses Lake Manapouri by boat, takes a bus over Wilmot Pass, and spends about 3 hours cruising Doubtful Sound before the same journey back: about 8.5 hours from 85 Lakefront Drive. It is the longer, more involved day, and it needs reasonable mobility for the transfers and a floating wharf.

How the two days fit together
- Fiord day first, cave in the evening. A Milford coach day from Te Anau takes 7.5 to 9.5 hours, and an evening cave departure needs check-in 30 minutes before. Pick a cave departure with a wide margin: the road and the weather set the return time.
- Cave first, fiord next morning. The safer order if your fiord day starts early: the cave is done, and nothing on the fiord day depends on it.
- Doubtful Sound and the cave on one day is a stretch. The Doubtful day takes about 8.5 hours from the same lakefront; book the cave on the day before or after.
- No hotel pickup on the cave trip. The fiord days with pickup collect you in Te Anau; the cave trip starts at 85 Lakefront Drive, so walk or drive there yourself.
The cave’s departure times appear only in the booking calendar, so check both calendars before you fix the order. Where is the cave? maps the check-in and the lake crossing.
