How a Visit to the Te Anau Glow Worm Cave Works

Why there is only one way in, what the 2 hours 15 minutes holds, the three rules that shape it, the fiord days that pair with it, and how to reach the lakefront.

The Te Anau glow worm cave has one way in: a boat. RealNZ’s Te Anau: Glowworm Caves Guided Tour crosses Lake Te Anau from the RealNZ Visitor Centre at 85 Lakefront Drive to the cave’s western shore, walks you in past rushing water and an underground waterfall, and ends in a small boat drifting in silence under the glow worms. It takes 135 minutes, from US$72 a person, checked November 2026.

The short answer

You do not have to choose an operator. By RealNZ’s own account it is the only company with access to the Te Anau caves, and there is no walk-in or independent route. So the choices are smaller ones: which departure, and what to do with the rest of your time in Fiordland. The trip runs all year, by day and in the evening, and because the cave is always dark, the glow worms show on any departure. The listing carries 3,176 reviews (checked November 2026) and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

What the 2 hours 15 minutes holds

Map of Lake Te Anau: the RealNZ Visitor Centre at 85 Lakefront Drive in Te Anau, check-in for the caves, a dashed boat route of about 15 km across the lake, and the Te Anau Glowworm Caves with Cavern House on the western shore
Check-in at 85 Lakefront Drive, the boat route across Lake Te Anau as mapped (about 15 km), and the cave on the western shore.

Check in at the RealNZ Visitor Centre 30 minutes before your departure; check-in closes 5 minutes before the boat leaves. A catamaran then crosses Lake Te Anau, about 15 km by the boat route as mapped, to Cavern House on the far shore, where displays cover the cave’s geology and history before the guide takes the group underground.

Inside, the path follows the river that is still shaping the cave: sculpted rock, whirlpools and a roaring underground waterfall. About 200 metres of the system is open to visitors; the cave section runs about 45 minutes. The last part is the one people remember: the group steps into a small boat and drifts into a grotto in total darkness, with no talking, under thousands of points of blue-green light. Tea and coffee are included, and the boat takes you back across the lake. An optional forest experience on the far shore is part of the listing too.

Three rules that shape the visit

  • No photos or video inside the cave. They are not permitted, to keep the glow worms visible for everyone: flash affects the glow worms and how well eyes adjust to the dark. Cameras are on the listing’s “not allowed” line. What you take home is what you saw.
  • Silence in the grotto. Everyone stays quiet for part of the trip, which is why it may not suit younger children, though they are welcome. No minimum age is published; the trip is not suitable for infants.
  • Bending, steps and cold. There is significant bending under a rock overhang at the entrance, steps throughout, walkways that are often wet, and a steady 8 to 12 °C. The trip is not suitable for wheelchair users, people with mobility impairments or anyone in heeled shoes. Bring a fleece, a waterproof jacket and non-slip shoes.

Pair the cave with a fiord day

The cave fills an afternoon or an evening; a fiord takes a full day. No listing combines the two, so they are separate bookings. The usual pairing is the caves one evening and Milford Sound the next morning, or the other way round. These are the days from Te Anau that sit best beside it:

What reviewers say it is, and is not

GetYourGuide’s AI summary of 265 verified reviews from the year to November 2026 praises the guides and the lake crossing and singles out the silent boat ride; it also reports that some travellers find the cave section rushed and want more time with the glow worms. One October 2026 reviewer found the cave “slightly smaller than I was expecting but not at all commercialised”; another, worried about tight spaces, wrote that there were places to duck but “the space never felt too confined”. Is the cave rushed? goes through what the reviews and the trip’s times add up to, and what you see in the dark explains the glow itself.

Free glow worms, and Waitomo

Two questions sit beside this one in search results. Can you see glow worms near Te Anau without paying? No official source names a free spot around the town, and the Te Anau cave itself is reached only on RealNZ’s boat: free glow worms in Te Anau sets out what the official sources do and do not cover. And is Waitomo better? The two caves are on different islands, about 990 km apart in a straight line, and show the same glowworm: Te Anau or Waitomo sorts it by route. For ticket details and a minute-by-minute of the trip, te-anau-glowworm-caves.com covers both closely.

Getting to the lakefront

Te Anau is the gateway town for Fiordland National Park, which the Department of Conservation (DOC) records as constituted in 1952, over 1.2 million hectares, and a World Heritage Area since 1986; RealNZ places the caves inside the park, on the lake’s western shore. From Queenstown it is about 172 km by road, routed from the RealNZ Visitor Centre at 88 Beach Street in Queenstown to the one at 85 Lakefront Drive; RealNZ gives about 2 hours 45 minutes by car or coach. From Manapouri it is 22 km by road, about 30 minutes. The departure point is on the lakefront in the middle of town, on the same street as DOC’s Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre at 1 Lakefront Drive. Where is the cave? has both maps.

What Visitors Say About the Cave

4.7/5 from 3,176 reviews on GetYourGuide

"It was an interesting excursion. We had an amazing female guide. She spoke very enthusiastically about the glowworms. She was very knowledgeable and was able to convey this well. Really enjoyed this special excursion. Highly recommended!"

Annemarie Netherlands

"What an amazing experience! While the globe worms were amazing the silent and very very dark boat ride to see them was even more exciting. Absolutely recommend must do activity in Nz"

Syed United States

"The staff were all very friendly. The boat ride out to the caves was lovely. Caves slightly smaller than I was expecting but not at all commercialised so that was good. Great to see the glow worms & the talk at the end was excellent."

Barbara United Kingdom

"The whole experience of this tour was so unexpected in how much we enjoyed each part from the boat trip across Lake Te Anau to the presentation by the hilarious guides with a hot chocolate in hand & then of course the caves with the stunning glowworms themselves. We would definitely recommend this tour."

Sandra Australia

"A good experience. All the staff were very friendly. It's well worth it. The only downside is that we were in a fairly large group, and the organization was a bit chaotic."

Javier Spain

"Interesting activity to do. Being in the caves in the pitch black where you can't even see your hand in front of your face is quite spooky. It was a cool experience but if you're claustrophobic or afraid of the dark, this maybe isn't the experience for you. Actually, maybe it is. Would be great exposure therapy! Plus you get to see glow worms!"

Louise United Kingdom

"We had a great time exploring the caves & learning about the glow worms, highly recommend this tour. We were fortunate enough to see the sunset on the return boat ride, it was beautiful."

Tracey Australia

"The cave was amazing, the glowworms really do look like constellations in the night sky when you are in there. The guides were all very informative and it was cool to see the glowworms under light so you know what it actually looks like and all about how they live. If you are concerned about feeling restricted in the cave it was not like that, there were places you needed to duck down but the space never felt too confined. The cave itself was pretty amazing also."
